Fundamental in the learning process of anyone is knowing how you learn best. We all have different talents and abilities and we all have different methods of internalising information from the various sources that exist. It is therefore of importance to be aware of these facts in an attempt to improve our learning and motivation. Teaching students to be aware therefore of which multiple intelligence they are more adapt to will help students plan how they study and assist them in formulating strategies for themselves to better their learning. From the teaching standpoint, it would give a teacher an idea of how to structure lessons as he/she will be able to gauge the multiple abilities or intelligences in their classroom. This personal competence of self awareness is there very useful to students and teachers as it promotes efficient learning and teaching.
KNOWING MY MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCE:
HOW DO I LEARN BEST?
PRE-KNOWLEDGE:
Students know that they have been engaged in different activities throughout their schooling which help them learn such as; singing, organising, role playing, viewing charts, viewing videos, working in groups, journaling, reciting poems.
Objectives:
at the end of the lesson pupils will ......
- be aware how they learn best and choose different strategies to help them learn more effectively.
The following content is covered in two sections.....
SECTION 1
What is Intelligence?
The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.
The ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations
The ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.
The ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations
Teacher strategy
The teacher firstly tells students that no matter which corner they choose no one would be incorrect in their answers and should therefore feel safe to give answers as to why they choose the different corners.
Teacher will ask students to state why they choose to go into the different corners of the classroom that they choose. The teacher will then ask students what they think intelligence means. He will write key words on the board as they come up. E.g. ability, knowledge, skills, acquire, to get, use........ He will then ask students to formulate use the words to formulate a definition for “intelligence” he will then ask for volunteers after which a simple definition such as the one stated above or one constructed with the words of students will be written on the board. |
Student Activity
Students will go into respective corners.
Students will respond according to their respective beliefs. Students will offer suggestions and ideas. Students will attempt to make a definition and will then share their answers and note the definition formulated by the teacher. |
Resources
Strips of Bristol board labelled: Music, Art, Mathematics, English.
Whiteboard marker, whiteboard. |
Sectional Review
The definition will be read aloud by entire class as the teacher gets them to understand that everyone is intelligent in their own way since we all learn and understand things in different ways.
SECTION 2
Howard Gardener’s Multiple Intelligences:
Linguistic intelligence, Logical mathematical intelligence, Musical intelligence, Bodily kinaesthetic intelligence, Visual Spatial intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence, Intra personal intelligence
Linguistic intelligence, Logical mathematical intelligence, Musical intelligence, Bodily kinaesthetic intelligence, Visual Spatial intelligence, Interpersonal intelligence, Intra personal intelligence
Teacher Strategy
The teacher will ask students to write in their books three (3) ways in which they think they learn best. E.g. Whether they like acting, charts.....
The students will be introduced to the term “Multiple intelligence.” They will then be introduced to what multiple intelligences states and then students will be given the MI assessment sheet so that students can answer questions to find out their intelligences. Students will be asked to write one more they wish they could be good at. Video/PowerPoint (Infusing Technology) The teacher will then show students a short YouTube video about multiple intelligences for students to internalize aspects of the different intelligences. Following this he will go through a PowerPoint presentation to solidify points and to engage students in discussion on each type. Teacher will ask students to write a proposal to the teacher telling him of their main 3 intelligences and what the teacher can do to help them learn by suggesting strategies or actions for the teacher to take. They will also be asked to write about one other intelligence and suggest a way to help students learn who are great at that intelligence. |
Student Activity
Students will write 3 ways they think helps them learn best. Some of the students will then randomly give some examples of what they wrote.
Students will complete the Multiple intelligence sheets and tabulate their scores to find out which intelligence they may most relate to. Students will write down the intelligence they wish they could be great at. Students will view video and engage in discussions coming while going through the PowerPoint with the teacher. Students will write in their book the proposal to the teacher. |

Sectional Review
Oral Questioning to recap main points under each intelligence. (Random selection of students.)
CLOSURE
Students will be asked to volunteer to summarize what was learned in class with the teacher giving clarification and comments when necessary.
FINAL EVALUATION
Students will orally talk about their proposals to the teacher after which they will hand them up for the teacher to take their views into consideration.
